Venue Factors

The Home Venue Factor (HVF) and Away Venue Factor (AVF), along with Power Ratings, are used to predict game margins.

The factors were created by comparing season final Jeff Sagarin Predictor power ratings retroactively to game scores from the season just completed.

For example, Nebraska won at Illinois 42-38 in 2019. In the 2019 season final ratings, Nebraska was 73.92 and Illinois was 67.35. Therefore, Nebraska would have been expected to beat Illinois on a neutral field by 7 points (6.57). Nebraska won by 4, so +2.57 (6.57-4) was applied to the Illinois HVF and -2.57 was applied to the Nebraska AVF.

The factors were calculated using ratings and scores from 2001-2023. Games at neutral sites were (of course) excluded. Games versus FCS teams were excluded. Overtime games were treated as ties.

You may notice a few negative HVFs and a few positive AVFs. Remember, these outcomes are relative to the power ratings, so while you may think that a particular HVF is too low (for example), it can be equally argued that the ratings are too high.
